McNutt, Sr., DDS A book written by a Pediatric Dentist with the specific aim of emphasizing a healthy and stress-free environment for the dental care of children in order to shape a positive attitude at an early age. I really like this one! •* Show Me Your Smile! A Visit to The Dentist by Christine Ricci A culturally current book. My granddaughter age 3 thinks if Dora says so it has to be good. Also, it is very well reviewed on Amazon. •* The Berenstein Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan & Jan Berenstein A classic children’s book with a mostly positive message about a loose tooth but with an unintended slightly negative subliminal message about extraction. •* The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss Silly rhymes but who can resist. * Teeth are Not for Biting by Elisabeth Verdick A book that deals with the common problem of children biting their playmates. *• No More Pacifier by Ricki Booker A cute “self-help book” with some practical suggestions for parents to “lick” the paci habit. My daughter fed hers to the ducks when she was feeding bread with her grandmother “Good-by Paci—Thanks Granny!” *• Usborne First Experiences book: Going to the Dentist by Anne Civardi A first visit book which, although well intended, misses the mark by dealing too explicitly for young children with fixing a cavity. *• Does a Lion brush? by Fred Ehrlich, MD Another early experience book to emphasize the importance of brushing. *• Does a Tiger Open Wide? by Fred Ehrlich, MD An early experience book that uses zoo animals and imagination to explain why cooperation at the dentist is important. *• A Visit to the Dentist--Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood (DVD/Video) A classic whose message still resonates with kindness and good intentions. It’s dated but the message is still good. KINDERGARTEN/EARLY ELEMENTARY *• My Tooth is About to Fall Out by Grace Maccarone A level one scholastic reader with short sentences that kids can sound out using their phonics skills *• A Tooth Story by Margaret McNamara A story about being the only kid in the first grade to not be on the “Lost Tooth Chart.” It has a “happy?” ending when two teeth are knocked out. *• Throw your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler A book that deals with the different ways divergent cultures deal with losing teeth. I really like this one! •* Brushing your teeth Can be Fun by Munro Leaf Presents Dental care as one important part of staying healthy overall. A lot of adults could profit from this message. *• David Decides About Thumb-sucking: A story for children. A guide for Parents by Susan Heitler, PhD Practical perspective from a clinical psychologist with a long bibliography from the Psychology Literature. I use this as a “loner book” in my office. PARENT RESOURCES *• Look Mom No Cavities! by Gregory F. George DDS Written by a Pediatric dentist to inform parents on how to raise a Cavity-Free Child. A good resource with a lot of information well presented. *• Growing Up Cavity Free by Stephen J. Moss DDS A factual well-written book that explains how to accomplish exactly what its title implies. Dr Moss is a respected researcher & educator in the Pediatric Dental field. This could be good reading for dentists as well.
